The holidays are over and it’s the start of another new year. It’s a time for looking back, but with an eye towards making the coming year even better. Each year, I like to make one personal and one business resolution.
On the personal level, this year I hope to reach the summit of at least 6 more of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks (“14-ers”). Colorado has more than 50 of them, so, at my age, I have to hustle if I’m going to scale all of them.
As for this year’s business resolution, I’m going to do a better job delegating. I recently read a business book in which Bill Marriott said, “A good day at work is when I have nothing to do.” He’s not lazy, that’s for sure. What he means is when you hire good people—in the case of ANACS, great people—you must give them the opportunity to reach their full potential. Among other things, that means letting them make decisions and then stepping back so they can make those decisions a success. I used to try to do it all myself, for fear it wouldn’t be done right. I’ve come to realize there are a number of “right” ways to get a job done and the way one person does it might just be better than the way I would have approached it. What I’ve learned is to communicate with our staff on where ANACS needs to be and then get out of the way so they can decide how best to get there.
All this leads me to tell you what a terrific team of people we have working at ANACS. It may be a cliché, but at ANACS it’s certainly true: everyone is completely dedicated to our customers. From my desk near the Customer Service Department, I hear the phone conversations with our customers. Some call for information; some call with a concern, some with a complaint. In virtually every case, the call is handled politely and concludes with the issue resolved and another satisfied customer. In the Grading Room, I see the graders getting to work early and /or staying late so we can meet, or exceed, our turnaround times. Same with our team in the Assembly Area. I see our Shipping Manager voluntarily working late so he can ship all the packages that need to get out that day. I see example after example almost every day at ANACS, and, best of all, this is always done cheerfully and with great pride, knowing it’s what our customers deserve.
So, as we kick off the New Year, may you have a terrific start to 2010. Here’s hoping you and your family enjoy good health, prosperity and great peace.
