Summer has definitely hit Colorado. We’ve put away our skis and taken out our fly rods while we continue to argue whether Colorado is at its most beautiful in the winter or the summer.
Meanwhile, each day at ANACS seems to bring an exciting new discovery. John Roberts, an ANACS’ grader and our Director of Attribution Services, recently discovered a new VAM. It’s an 1879-O Morgan Dollar, VAM 43. After John discovered it, he suggested to the collector that he submit the coin to Leroy Van Allen so it could be confirmed by Leroy and added to his compendium of VAMS. At ANACS, we put “Discovery Piece” on the label. Leroy and, especially, the collector were thrilled by John’s discovery.
By the way, this is not the first time John has pulled this off. John has discovered more than 200-yes, more than 200--other new VAMS. It’s also worth noting that other grading services attribute the top hundred, or so, VAMS, whereas, at ANACS, we attribute more than 3,400 VAMS!
Recently, Michael Fahey and J.P. Martin certified an 1825 Bust half. It’s an Overton 118 and was graded VF20. The lucky submitter was excited to learn the coin far exceeded his original expected value.
Speaking of J.P. Martin, this year marks the 25th consecutive year that he will be teaching Detection of Counterfeit and Altered Coins. The class is part of the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar of Numismatics.
If you’ve attended the week-long event before, I don’t need to tell you how much fun it is; if you haven’t attended, go to www.Money.org
for all the fun details.
Let me tell you one anecdote from a seminar. It was probably 15 years ago and a student was sitting by himself in the cafeteria eating his lunch when three people came by to ask if they could join him. His luncheon companions turned out to be Q. David Bowers, Ken Bressett, author of The Red Book, and Eric Newman!

Hello Answer man,
My question has to do with a coin I recently purchased, graded by ANACS. The coin is a 1909s/Horiz s EF 45 details (corroded). Also a coin graded EF 45 details corroded, does this mean that this coin will continue to corrode until its just a rotten piece of metal with no signs of ever being a coin?

Dear ANACS,
I have been collecting coins for only five months and have enjoyed picking up some particularly choice Franklin Halves. I was wondering, how are the Full Bell Lines determined? Are their any tips you can provide a “newbie” like me?
Thank you very much,
Paul S.
